The Japanese Spitz is an incredibly versatile breed, our experience is that it is a fairly large dog in a smaller package. It has the stamina and energy to accompany us on long excursions and hikes, which suits us who want an active outdoor life. At the same time, the breed has an effective on and off switch and comes to rest well for rest and coziness.
The Japanese Spitz is well suited to many different dog sports, regardless of whether you are interested in agility with speed, nosework or obedience with precision. It is intelligent, compliant and responsive.
The double coat is surprisingly easy to care for, dirt falls off when it dries after a wet walk and it is kept tangle-free without more demanding effort than combing 1-2 times a week. No other trimming/cutting is required than between the pads. With bathing and blow-drying between laps, the coat stays crisp white.
The breed guards and "alarms" with barking and is therefore generally prone to barking. In a group, they often trigger each other into a multi-voiced chorus. It is possible to train from puppyhood to regulate barking and create good habits, but you should be aware of their instinct to bark when choosing the breed.
The whole family agrees that we have found "our" breed as the Japanese Spitz meets the different needs and wishes of all family members.
Please read more about the breed at SKK or Japansk Spets Klubb and contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
